While unpatched games cannot take full advantage of the new architectural optimizations the systems provide, Sony/MS at least allows most games to run with the massive uptick in clock speed these new systems provide (some games as I understand have to be locked at the default frequencies of the PS4/Xbox or they 'break' the game, but most don't), as such since the GPU/CPU load is seen by the game as never reaching the threshold where it starts to lower the resolution, they're effectively running at a 'higher res' than the previous gen most of the time.īut still, there's usually an upper limit on dynamic resolution systems as well, so even in games with these (especially with the PS4 Pro versions which rarely allowed the game to actually go up to native 4k as the Pro would never hope of reaching it), you're still limited by the original code.Ĭlick to shrink. For the PS5 at least, it's completely up to the developers/publisher.

The games that do show large advantages without patches were ones that either utilized dynamic resolution where the resolution depends on the load of the GPU or shipped with a variable frame rate (or had an option to 'unlock' the frame rate). So they have no expectation of running on anything other than the base hardware the game shipped as supporting and have little way of fully tapping into that power without an explicit patch.

Console games are not architected like PC games where they have to support a massive varying hardware base out of the box, until the advent of the PS4 Pro/One X, having even simple mode changes like 'resolution/performance' were almost non-existent. There’s still reason to be cheerful however – EA Access on PS4 still provides 32 full games to be downloaded and played, offering some fairly decent value for money in the process we’d say.Click to shrink.Yes.

Now don’t forget, while the PS4 doesn’t support backwards compatibility, the PS5 will support it, so when the next-generation of consoles arrives later next year Sony’s next machine shouldn’t suffer quite an egregious disadvantage in this regard (though it is still unlikely that the console will be able to natively play PS3 games).Īnnoyingly, there isn’t a way to play a good number of EA’s PS3 titles on PS4 as yet – not least because the publisher/developer is barely represented on Sony’s PlayStation Now streaming service.
